Fortune favoured the brave (or perhaps the foolhardy) the night we breached the building that was the New Zealand Defence Force’s head office for over 65 years until the commencement of strengthening work. It was ever so much fun scaling the onsite crane, locating the majestic spiral staircase and the two additional narrow internal staircases which were used to walk classified documents between floors, and sitting on the apex of the roof in the cool of late summer. Our only disappointment was that the much-storied SCIF room in the heart of the second floor had been gutted prior to our arrival.
