As you all know, we are celebrating 25 years of remarkable success for one of South St. Paul’s most shining achievements – The South St. Paul Educational Foundation. On behalf of the Board, staff and volunteers of the Foundation, we are delighted to have you here with us to commemorate this event.
As the story goes, the brainchild for the creation of our foundation came about during a dinner table discussion at the home of Dave & Leslie Metzen sometime back in 1983 while Dave was Superintendent of South St. Paul Schools. It soon led to the appointment of a task force by the Board of Education to explore the possibility of creating an educational foundation to support the students of South St. Paul Schools. In 1984, The South St. Paul Educational Foundation was chartered as a 501 C-3 non-profit organization in the State of Minnesota.
Susan O’Brien was named Executive Director, and our goal was to provide funding for program support, scholarships and capital improvements. In our first year, we awarded $3,750 in scholarships to three graduates. Since that first year, scholarships totaling $2,650,000 have been awarded to 1,962 graduates. Along with this, we have provided program funding directly to our classrooms totaling $1,770,000. In total, over the last 25 years, the Educational Foundation has funded over $5,000,000 for scholarships, programs and capital improvements. What an achievement we can all be proud of! We continue to be one of the strongest public school educational foundations in the State of Minnesota.
Since 2005, our organization has been guided by Cari Vujovich as our Executive Director; her enthusiasm, creativity and dedication to our mission will serve us well as we go forward into our next 25 years. Thank you to all who have helped (and donated!) over the last 25 years!
