When the Denton, Texas quartet Fergus & Geronimo rolled into the studio, their faces wore a dazed look - a cross between travel exhaustion and utter excitement. It was interesting to see that this expression was closely tied to their sound. As they powered through "Powerful Lovin'," a garage rock version of doo-wop soulfulness, it was clear that there was some real emotion behind the static. There's a bluesy strain in the words being sung, but there's a fervor behind it that made the strain seem enthusiastically welcomed.
