This eight minute film promotes the European Commission research project UncertWeb. UncertWeb is a three year project involving eight partners from across Europe, looking at developing tools and infrastructure to help us to manage uncertainty in complex environmental models.
We undertook filming at Aston University with Dr Dan Cornford and conducted remote interviews over Skype with various European research bodies (Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, Norwegian institute for Air Research, The Food and Environment Research Agency and Institute for Geoinformatics – Muenster university). Part of the brief was to incorporate different quality audio and video into the film shot by the partners themselves, as well as including output from computer models. Using 2D graphics we created a common platform that allowed us to introduce these models throughout the film.
UncertWeb is set for a really exciting future where models aren’t just used to make predictions, but they also acknowledge that those models have imperfections. This is relevant to almost anyone in society and can effect day to day things such as, “do I put my washing out to dry”, through to policy making at an international level.
