Part art project, part social experiment and examination of rape culture, we simulated a sexual assault to draw individuals in then gave them our poem. We performed in three times in Johannesburg: the townships of Alexander, Diepsloot, and for the National Union Of Metalworkers of South Africa (the largest affiliate of the Congress of South African Trade Unions.) The response was both informative and explosive. Our impromptu audiences responded very uniquely. In Alexander, some members of the community tried to intervene initially and even threatened to harm our assaulting actor. In the impoverished township of Diepsloot individuals ignored the assault for the most part with one person even complimenting our attacker. Finally (in the NUMSA gender conference) our performance culminated in an hour long discussion. Please forward the innovative project along. Reactions and responses will be posted later.
