In this lecture we will present an overview of development of negative ion sources. Features of negative ion generation will be outlined and different types of negative ion sources will be considered. We will discuss advanced ion source technology and techniques applicable for the ion sources of the next generation accelerators. We will pay particular attention to practical aspects of operation of negative ion sources.
