Young Hamlet returns home from university to discover that, not only is his father (Old Hamlet) newly dead, but that his mother, Gertrude, has married Old Hamlet’s brother, Claudius, and that Claudius is now king. Resulting instability in the state of Denmark has also led to threats of invasion by the Norwegian prince. Curtains up on a dark winter night; a ghost walks the ramparts of Elsinore Castle in Denmark, and thus our play begins.
Director Jessica Adel takes a visionary approach to the text, allowing actors to encompass a dangerously isolated world. Removing all sense of period, or sleight of hand, and surrounding Hamlet in a desperately cold environment, this is Shakespeare as raw as we can hope to make it.
