A Sad State of Affairs is inspired by the oddball comedies from decades past that used to pop up on UHF TV channels at two in the morning--in the days before informercials. It stars Chicago actor Jeremy Trager as a wandering street performer who dreams of reviving the long-gone vaudeville industry while standing in the middle of deserted county roads trying to raise money. The woman who won't tip him, played by Louisville's Laura Morton has the misfortune of also staying in the hotel room next door to him. Joliet's Darren Gresaham is her boss. Silent screen performer Carla Laemmle, who made her Hollywod debut in Lon Chaney's Phantom of the Opera (1925) returns to the screen as 101 year-old Connie the Office Assistant. Since it's sort of a musical, there are also four original songs. It was written and directed, shot and edited, with music and lyrics by Matthew A. Lanoue. Filmed in Utica, Illinois, near Starved Rock Park.
