“Amigos de Vamos Adelante” works to promote and support the interests of Vamos Adelante.
Since 1991, Nina Jorgensen, through her organization “Vamos Adelante,” has worked to provide humanitarian aid to the people of the Escuintla District of Guatemala.
Within this district are 24 villages located on the side of Fuego, an active volcano. Approximately 1,000 families, including 6,000 children, live in this district. Individuals’ conditions are characterized by widespread illiteracy, lack of basic education, moderate to severe malnutrition, parasite related illness, alcoholism, lack of basic health care, and other symptoms associated with chronic poverty. Among those served by Vamos Adelante are the neediest families and individuals including orphans, single mothers, disabled, and elderly villagers.
Vamos Adelante is the only organization providing ongoing humanitarian aid to these people. There is little government support and no other safety net—just Nina, Vamos Adelante and her sponsors.
Central to Vamos Adelante’s success over the past twenty years are friends and friends of friends of Nina’s from throughout Europe and North America. Nina, through Vamos Adelante, has developed several programs which enlists friends as sponsors for the individuals Nina serves. These sponsors “adopt” children and elderly and provide families with food, wood stoves and water filters and fund salaries for teachers and health promoters. Sponsors, together with annual donors, provide the financial support for all of Vamos Adelante’s activities.
