On Thursday March 28, REBUILD Globally held an event called Cocktails for A Cause in downtown Orlando, Fla. The event featured a short film presentation, music entertainment, an acrobatic performance and a silent auction. Created and founded in 2010 by Julie Colombino, Cocktails For A Cause was to raise money for programs that help support the surviving earthquake victims in Haiti. The organization provides three community development programs for those in Port-au-Prince Haiti. The Apprenticeship Initiative and Street Children Initiative focuses on helping young adults and children receive proper skill-building training, education and employment. The backbone behind the entire fundraising revenue is the Workforce Development program, which provides jobs to local families and individuals. In this program you build artistry skills and hand-make sandals that are made from recycled tires. Known as REBUILDERs, these sandals are “…made with dignity, helping individuals and families and reducing waste in Haiti by repurposing discarded tires and leather.” In 2011, REBUILD Globally sold 1,720 REBULDERs and profited $21,941 from those sales. As far as future endeavors, Colombino sees her organization expanding their mission even further than just Haiti.
