Mindy Maslin founded the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's Tree Tenders program 21 years ago. Since then, PHS has trained nearly 4,000 volunteer Tree Tenders, who work in neighborhoods throughout Philadelphia and the surrounding communities. Caring for trees, she says, is "a natural way of revitalizing communities," and there are dozens of stories of "acquaintance, connection, and renewal" as a result of this work. Some of those stories were shared during a February 2013 workshop PHS hosted with The Truth About Trees, with support from the National Science Foundation.
