The skeleton of a slave named Fortune, found in a closet and exhibited by the Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury, Connecticut until 1970, has inspired me to create a new performance work. Addressing the literal and metaphoric skeletons in the closet of cultural institutions along 5th Avenue, I reclaimed the forgotten bones of African and indigenous peoples. The performance used the entire length of Museum Mile, beginning with and ending with El Museo del Barrio. A significant part of the performance was in the African Wing and the Great Hall at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
