Due to the overexploitation of domestic fishing grounds, European countries have expanded the range of their distant water fleets towards foreign marine resources. The external fishing activities of European Countries are criticized for leading to an overexploitation of various marine species and for representing an unfair competition for local fishers. For the EU, the most significant fishery agreement is the one with Mauritania. This film is based on discussions and interviews from a meeting of the Coalition of Fair Fisheries Arrangements (CFFA) in February 2013. Representatives of West Africa’s small-scale fishery sector talk about their expectations and concerns related to the new Fisheries Protocol between Mauritania and the EU and its potential implications for other fisheries arrangements in West Africa. The new Protocol is currently in the ratification phase.
