After producing two educational videos and hosting two prior camps, the High Fives Foundation and B.A.S.I.C.S. Program Director | Professional Athlete - JT Holmes deemed it necessary to bring the B.A.S.I.C.S. to the snow with a camp at Squaw Valley.
Riding the coattails B.A.S.I.C.S. Avalanche Awareness video, this camp focused on safety and awareness when skiing and riding in the backcountry. Backcountry equipment usage and instruction, meetings and tours with Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows Ski Patrol members, a bag-jump session and overall ski instruction were the main themes in this unique camp.
Four young participants were chosen based on their answers to a simple question: "What can you come up with for a creative fundraiser for the High Fives Foundation?" After many creative (and some interesting) answers were submitted, four finalists were announced. Chance Bordner, Trent Green, Nathan Francis and Zayne Walterscheid were chose to learn a new skill set and become better equipped in the backcountry.
Their experience over three days at Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows was very educational. A rotating cast of world class coaches including Timy Dutton, Garrett Russell, Sean Carey, Jimeel Ferris and Kyle O'Neal assisted JT Holmes in guiding the aspiring skiers through several full days of demonstrating the essentials to become better equipped in the backcountry.
