This is perhaps one of the few Costa Rican Mask Makers still around. He has been doing this most of his life and is passing the knowledge on to his son, and perhaps his other children. He was ever so proud and happy to show us how he makes the masks and answer all our questions.
We even had a contest- which, of course, I entered, along with 2 of my fellow travelers. My attempt is in the middle of the three you will see. You first start with a blob of clay and the work from there. It was quite involved.
Gerardo and his son then gave us a lively demo of how the masks are used in festivals.
Thoroughly enjoyed- and their kindness and hospitality was awesome.
