This was created by artist Kim Abeles in collaboration with 800 survivors of domestic violence and the organization, A Window Between Worlds. Two years of workshops lead to the "pearls" created by survivors. Using the metaphor of valuable pearls formed inside oysters in response to a harmful irritant, participants transformed memories of domestic pain into objects and shared texts. The sculptural table visualizes the process, and the complete installation contains all the pearls. The installation also includes several books like Handbook for Living, containing photographs of each pearl side by side with the participant's words of advice for ending violence. These include specific and relevant advice based on their experiences.
