Susan Hardwick-Smith, mom, wife, physician, triathlete, embarked on a journey of strength and courage when she signed up for the Arizona Ironman. In the process, she raised over $30,000 to benefit West Africa Fistula Foundation. Her passion and loving heart took her across the Atlantic to Sierra Leone on a two-week surgical mission trip to restore women's lives and heal them from a forgotten malady called obstetric fistula. Conditions were less than ideal everywhere because of the lack of electricity and running water. Many of her patients are young women who have lived through a decade long civil war and walked miles and miles from neighboring villages to Bo, to be healed. Since the arrival of Dr Hardwick-Smith on February 16, 2013 more than twenty women were operated on, given hope and a new beginning.
