I had such high hopes for getting some great carnival worker faces on film. But it was so hard to get any of them to agree to it. I was told by one that it's because they've been burned by the media so many times - and that some of them don't want the "authorities" to find them. No amount of persuading would convince them I wasn't with the media.
I had my Canon 5D in stealth mode which is just the camera, my Rokinon 35mm and a monopod so it looks like I''m just shooting stills. (although I find it's getting harder and harder to get away with) That's the only reason I was able to shoot the people you see - simply because they had no idea they were being filmed - except for the end shot of girl in the booth who caught me.
There was one guy I wanted to get so badly. He just had the best face - one in a million. Just this huge guy - 300lbs easy and MEAN looking - cartoonish features that any director or casting agent would fall in love with. Turned out he was the boss. His name was Gary and when I asked one of the carnies if he thought Gary would let me shoot him he just laughed and said he wanted to be there to watch when I asked...
I got the hint.
