This video offers a unique opportunity to go behind the walls of San Quentin State Prison.
The GRIP (Guiding Rage into Power) Program, offered by Insight-Out, has been developed over 17 years of working with thousands of prisoners.
The Program provides a clear map for transforming rage into power and effectively takes the mystery out of what leads to violent behavior.
One of the goals of the program is to heal the unfelt pain from which people lash out. It investigates one of the premises of the course called: "hurt people hurt people - healed people heal people". Participants partake in a process of creating an inventory of 'unfinished business' that relate to traumatic experiences that have become formative defense mechanisms which generate triggered reactions.
Other important aspects of the program include:
* Impulse control
* Working with shame
* Creating personal histories of violence suffered/violence perpetrated and learn from the patterns that become visible that way
* Meetings with victims of violence
* Addiction as an expression of violence
* Making a pledge to become a non-violent person and a peacemaker
For many men the program provides a life-changing experience wherein they bond deeply with other men. The learn how to listen and express previously overwhelming feelings. Students acquire a comprehensive toolkit to support implementing a newly learned decision-making process that no longer victimizes others and contributes to creating safety and peace in our communities.
The program actively interacts with the community by inviting in guest teachers, victims, CDCR officials and other community members.
