As I'm preparing for my next dance film project, Pauline and I are working on a new solo for our beloved friend Zoë. It is only the beginning of our process, however it's quite a rewarding one. None of us has done anything like this. We are creating a piece about her, thus we title it Zoë for now.
Recently I attended a family's funeral service. As I listened to the beautifully delivered eulogy, it amazed me how someone's life was summarized on to these pages of papers. It made me think of what i would do if I have to write a eulogy for someone. I am terrible when it comes to words. So I thought I would probably dance it. Since dance is so abstract, I could probably 'tell' things that are so personal without humiliating this person. It inspired me to create a solo that summarizes a person. Pauline also has her idea of this solo for Zoë. We then decided to collaborate and make a new work about her.
We generate the materials based on journal entries, her childhood memories, places where she has traveled and our observation of her. It is so personal at times we have to take a break and find a new way to approach this work. We barely just started this. We are looking forward for this incredible journey ahead.
This clip is merely a little fraction of some movements and environment we were playing with. I adore Zoë for her dedication and openness. Her strength inspires me. I'm just so excited about this process, that I have the urge to share this. And this may be the only peek we would let others in until we have a finish product.
It is our second rehearsal footage. She is not dressed properly for filming and she didn't know the footage will end up here. I'm sorry, Zoë! :)
