The former dean of the Perley Isaac Reed School of Journalism at West Virginia University, Chris Martin was appointed vice president for WVU’s University Relations (then Institutional Advancement) in 2004. In this role, Martin leads an integrated marketing communication division that has developed a unique hybrid of multi-platform documentary storytelling, marketing-driven communications and emergent media relations to build interactive communication with the largest audience in WVU’s history.
Martin began teaching journalism at WVU in 1990, after an eight-year career as a reporter and editor. While a professor in the WVU School of Journalism, Martin won two Freedom Forum research awards for her work in journalism history and co-directed the Poynter Institute’s Newswriting and Reporting Fellowships, from 1997 to 2005. Martin was named the 1999 Freedom Forum Journalism Professor of the Year, the 1998 CASE/Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teachers West Virginia Professor of the Year and a winner of the 1997-98 WVU Foundation Award for Outstanding Teaching.
