Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit organization known for helping struggling families own homes.
Since 2009, The Habitat for Humanity Orlando chapter has provided 40 low-income families with homes within their Stag Horn Villas community. In Feburary, Stag Horn Villas was still under construction in hopes of reaching their goal of 58 homes. Interested homeowners can apply for affordable living and then are expected to put in volunteer time as part of the homeownership program. The multi-family community gives local homeowners an opportunity to help assist in constructing homes. Homeowners can also volunteer at one of the organization's ReStore locations, which is also big part of funding the homes provided within Habitat for Humanity Orlando. According to Director of Retail Operations, Tom May, ReStore is a "home improvement, home decor resale store" that obtains all of it's merchandise from local donations and commits 100 percent of their profit to Habitat for Humanity Orlando. Founded in 1991, ReStores in Orlando strive to sell "...items to treasure hunters and bargain shoppers alike to raise money for [their] mission of eliminating substandard housing." The mission of Habitat ReStore is to serve in providing homes and a sense of hope to families in the surrounding area while at the same time reducing the increasing waste of landfills. Earth Day is fast approaching and Orlando's ReStores are accepting local donations that will not only promote recycling but also benefit their mission of providing local homes to struggling families.
