In March 2013 ScanLAB@UCL ran the second of two residential workshops in the Kielder Forest with a group of students from the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL. The workshop, entitled INSERTION, saw the students fabricate and deploy a series of 'site perfect' elements designed and made in response to the capture process.
Each insertion was a response to the brief 'A MONUMENT to HERE, A SIGN to YONDER'. Proclaiming students to first digitally define and then within their insertions physically celebrate both "HERE" (a postion within their site) and YONDER, a known but unreachable postion in the landscape (Kielder Reservoirs Valve Tower)
Sites chosen by the students were initially captured using a 3D scanner to describe in forensic detail the unique site conditions. Teams, once armed with this information, designed, fabricated and re-installed their insertions back into the forest, with perfect precision.
This short documentary by Sammy Lee follows the groups progress and shows glimpses of the final insertions as they are installed back into the forest.
ScanLAB@UCL is part of the Bartlett Media Hub at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL. INSERTION is the second in a series of the two workshops series Testing Ground supported by The Paul Hamlyn Foundation and The Kielder Water & Forest Park Development Trust.
