WOW! We had some serious technical difficulties exporting this one! For episode 004 of Brew Age, we gathered with a dozen SF/Bay Area home brewers at Brew Labs in the Mission District to document what it takes to hone your beer palette. It was one of 6 meetups that this group had, lead by Master Cicerone, Richard Higgins. Richard is one out of four Master Cicerones in the WORLD! A cicerone is the equivalent to a wine sommelier.
This event, an Off Flavor event, is designed for home brewers to become more aware of the many different flavors and chemicals that are infused beer. By identifying these subtle tastes and aromas, they can really start to finesse the way they judge and create their own brews.
We thought this would be interesting to document because many people do not realize what kind of science and intelligence is really involved in the beer making process. Some may say, “Oh, I can taste a bit of chocolate in this stout.” But WHY? What is happening chemically that is bringing the chocolate flavor forefront amongst the others?
This episode was the second outing we ever made for the Brew Age production. We had older cameras and less gear so this piece unfortunately doesn’t have the polished, cinematic look that we really strive for. Having said that, this is a very informative episode and I think it’s valuable to our arsenal in the sense that it shows a very unique perspective of the “underground” home brewing society. We hope that it encourages people to learn more about beer and become involved with the community.
Thank you brewlabsf.com/ and EVERYONE else involved!
