Correction: Commentary should state that 'slavery was abolished in the British Empire in 1834', not 'slavery was finally abolished in this country in 1834'.
Ziggi Alexander CBE and Audrey Dewjee researched, created and exhibited 'Roots in Britain: Black and Asian Citizens from Elizabeth 1 to Elizabeth 11'. The exhibition covered four hundred years of our history viewed through over 250 annotated images of paintings, drawings, gravestones, newspapers, and photographs showing the participation of a diverse range of people in British life.
An ATV production crew filmed the touring version of the exhibition and interviewed Ziggi in August 1981. The resulting 10 minute film is just as relevant today as it was then.
