In the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) of Crete, in Greece we embarked on a traverese in the mid of summer carrying 10 liters of water each over several thousand meters of elevation change round trip. We made the summit at 2453 Meters on the first day after nearly 10 hours of hiking for a total of 16 hours of hiking over 2 days and 20 miles..
This mountain range has over 30 peaks above 2,000 meters and it quite expansive and remote wilderness backcountry that is not so well-known to the outside world. Typically snow remains well into the summer and weather can be unpredictably variable with temperatures in the winter reaching -25 C Windchill.
One of the few places in the world where you can hike up to a snow covered peak and then back down to the beach to swim in the summer.
