We didn't stop at animation and stop motion in discussing handmade storytelling. In order to capture life frame by frame, we first needed to exercise our illustration and puppeteering skills. In honor of my dog (who passed away a day before the workshop started) students agreed to use the heartwarming song "Time to Say Goodbye" as our GIANT FACE puppet lip sync project. They even thought up the idea to do a little dedication at the end. It was nice.
There are two versions of the same performance. 6 participants painted one piece of the face (4 eyes, two mouths our 7th person painted a commemorative silhouette of a dachshund.
Version 1 is our first take on the first day. After critique, the kids wanted to do a modified style of puppeteering in Version 2. So the next day we went for it. As I was doing a compiling edit of footage for Version 2 some of my Tech Arts for Girls Students supported the idea that I impose Version 2 heads on the original source video. With some crude key-framing, motion and a sepia filter we got these results. These tools I will teach in a editing based class in the future. Enjoy! -Alice
