Sony HX200V---The Spring migration of Greater White-fronted Geese has begun. Today, especially after dark, many flocks of these small geese are passing over, heading for their nesting grounds in Canada, Alaska and Siberia. They are saving energy for the long trip, by going at a slow cruising speed. They were about two miles away.
On 4/22/13, at daybreak, a flock of this size came skimming low over the treetops of my place, heading to the Northwest. They were in their most efficient long-distance mode, doing about 45 mph and moving their wings easily in shallow strokes.
