From his time as an SSU3 driver in Alsace until his dying day, Steve Galatti incarnated the very spirit of the American Field Service. As "Doc" Andrew's right hand man, Steve made things happen at the Ambulance, at "21"--- and it was he who revived AFS's ambulance service in 1939, remaining at the helm after the war when it metamorphosed into an international student exchange program. Steve was a St. Mark's and Harvard man, a football star in his day. He came from an immigrant family of Greek Chiots---- the Galatis, Byzantine nobility long specializing in coordinating international trade in the Mediterranean. His father, Paul, was a cotton trader.
