Launched in 2011, the objective of JTI Clean City Lab is to revisit everyday objects and raise the awareness of smokers and non-smokers of the need to act responsibly towards others, respecting their urban living environments. The first edition focused on the portable ashtray of the future and the second on ashtrays for outdoor use. This year’s focus on urban spaces was even more challenging.
The 16 prototypes (realized by the students of Milan’s Politecnico, London South Bank University, Madrid’s IED-Spain and HEAD Geneva) were be on display at La Triennale di Milano from April 9 to 14, 2013 in a space designed by the Spanish designer Vicente Garcia Jimenez. The setting depicted an urban environment overlying a digital communications network to create a backdrop in which numbers, letters, codes and intervals mark the pace and heart-beat of modern life.
