Nassau County Executive, Ed, recently joined with Nassau County Safe Haven Coordinator, Timothy Jaccard and Vice President of All Island Transportation, Lawrence Plessinger Jr in furthering the outreach of the safehaven program. Now all 3 of Mr Plessinger's taxi cab companies, Ollies Taxi, All Island Trans and Taxi Lationo will carry the Safe Haven Logo on the side of his taxi fleet, indicating that these taxis can be used to bring an otherwise abandoned infant to the safety of a local hosptal. Mr Jaccard has been instrumental in nassau and nationally in helping to get laws passed to protect the lives of new born babies .
Since the program started, Mr Jaccard was proud to report that 2,876 babies have been saved. With this new Safe Haven going yellow program , a mother of a new born baby can call a local cab to bring the mother and soon to be born baby to safety and meet up with an advocate at no cost or judgement. Because of Mr Jaccards efforts in furthering this program, there has not been a single death of a new born in Nassau in the last 6 years. The goal of the program is to logistically have the mother/woman give birth in a hospital and not in an unsafe environment - Having hundreds of existing cabs on the streets of Nassau County has already helped to meet the goals of the Safe Haven program. When the program first started it only included hospital signs, then ambulance signs. County Executive Ed Mangano has been a strong supporter and was instrumental in initiating this new phase of the Safe Haven program.
