Phoebe Apperson Hearst, the child bride of George Hearst, a successful mining engineer, who later became a U.S. Senator. Soon after their marriage on June 15, 1862, the couple moved to San Francisco, California, where Phoebe gave birth to their only child, newspaper giant William Randolph Hearst, on April 29, 1863.
She was a suffragette and a philanthropist.
The Palace of Fine Arts was designed by Bernard Maybeck and when the exposition ended, the Palace was so beloved that a Palace Preservation League, founded by Phoebe Apperson Hearst, was founded while the fair was still in progress.
