Gerard Alexander Kruisheer is an undergraduate student of the marine science department at UH Hilo and a staff member of NSF-funded Spatial Data Analysis and Visualization Lab (SDAV). He built a Remotely Operated Underwater Vehicle (ROV) with his research partner Joel Cook using open source electronics, open source software and CAD software, and an open-source 3D printer to create the majority of the parts. In this video interview, Gerard talks about the motivation behind this innovative project, the design concepts of the ROV, and how he benefited from his activities at SDAV. Their achievement exemplifies the effects EPSCoR Hawaii has on students with great potential in Hawaii.
