Our Nations Education System Is Designed To Benefit The Most Informed.
Help Us Empower Parents With The Information And Tools They To Navigate NYC's Complex School System
Our mission is to empower all parents, especially parents of our neediest students with the information and tools necessary to navigate the NYC school system and maximize their children’s education.
We especially want to benefit immigrant parents, non-English speakers, and other less empowered parents who may feel disadvantaged in navigating American schools, starting in our home city of New York and then, through our online resources, throughout the country.
WHAT IS THE PARENT EMPOWERMENT PLATFORM?
The Platform is a set of online resources and proven strategies parents can access to learn more about the best ways to support learning and guide their children through the complex NYC school system.
It will provide parents:
FREE access to high quality online videos featuring our nation’s leading education experts
Help navigating NYC complex school system
An Ask an Expert chat program to receive online video responses to their questions from our nations leading experts
Online forums to gain valuable insights from thousands of other parents
And the convenience of accessing the information and tools online, on their computer or Smartphone, will give parents more time to be involved in their children's learning. The online videos will feature the most up to date educational information and research. All videos will be presented in English and Spanish, and other languages will be available through sub-titles.
Parents will learn:
How identify the qualities of a great school.
The secrets to the pre-k, Elementary, Middle, and High School Application Processes
The structure of the DOE and who to contact to resolve concerns
How to speak the language of the DOE
How to get the best teacher for their child
How to effectively advocate
And much more.
Over the past year we’ve built relationships with educational experts, we’ve attended public events and created an initial connection with over 6,000 parents, and we’ve already created one complete video series about how New York City parents can understand the complex high school application process and get their children into the best possible schools. We’ve also shot most of the interviews for a second series about how parents anywhere can make sure their kids are getting the best possible teachers.
So here’s what we want to do now—and why we need your help:
1. Create 5 Video Series
We want to finish the video productions we have currently underway and create several new series. Topics will include:
Identifying the best pre-school for your child.
The insider secrets to the pre-school, kindergarten, and middle school application process,
Preparing your child for the specialized high school exam,.
10 steps to college readiness,
How to support learning at home, and how to turn your child into a really good reader.
We will always make all of our videos in both English and Spanish versions, and increased funds will allow us to also reach other immigrant communities (paying for translation, voice recording, and a second round of editing for each video).
2. Complete Website
We’re building a custom website at pmadnyc.org. We have finished the design phase and now need to pay for the backend web development and the integration of important social media features that we need to make it truly interactive and responsive to parents’ needs and questions. While we could just upload the videos to YouTube, by embedding them within an interactive platform like this—with direct access to real education experts—we’ll multiply the potential benefit for parents ten times over—and we’ll be able to keep track of what content is most beneficial as we move forward.
We already have the background and connections within the educational world to create premiere content. As we were creating our first videos, in fact, we were told by people within the NYC Department of Education (DOE) that these videos were exactly what the city needed, but that the city DOE was unable to produce them, for bureaucratic and budgetary reasons. We also have the team put together to bring these things to life (see our board profiles below). All we need now is the funds to do it. And that means we need you.
1. Donate if you feel so moved (and we hope you do!).
2. Leave a comment on the IndieGoGo page
3. Send an email to anyone you think would be interested
4. Post to Facebook and Twitter.
