Large demonstrations in the city centre of Athens are becoming the new national icon of Greece. The structural adjustment policies long practiced on Third World countries have been prescribed by the EU, its central bank, and the IMF. The economic and social decline of the country is astounding and shocking, as year after year the international debt mountain remains unmanageable with an economy in Depression.
But Greeks put on a friendly face for us tourists nonetheless. And a visit to their beautiful country is easy solidarity (assuming you're not yourself in economic crisis).
