In an age that boasts gender equality less than 9% of professional engineers in the UK are female and, through my research, I believe that the toys we are given as children may be influencing this statistic. I have created a construction toy and accompanying story book designed to deliver an experience that harnesses the different ways girls play and learn to hopefully increase their future interest in the sector. I believe females have a lot to offer the engineering world and challenging the current cultural ideologies about what it means to be an engineer is the first step to change.
I am Tanya Marshall, a product design student about to graduate from the University of Dundee and this is my final year honours project.
