Hi everyone! :D My name is Sibel and currently, I am in Van Pelt studying for Finals and paper jamming away. As clearly depicted by this small escapade, I stand for breaking norms and creating social change – how to create environments incorporating social support systems. When I think social support system, images of 1995 Chicago Heat Wave, Hurricane Katrina, Haiti, Sandy Hook, Newtown, 9/11 or Boston Marathon bombings come to mind. All graffic and chaotic life disturbing events that brought people, people who didn’t kno one another together to help one another. Wayne Baker writes in his book Achieving Success through Social Capital that individualism is a myth and my experience at Penn has taught me that. We all need one another, in some context. Whether it’s learning something new, getting a hug that says YOU CAN MAKE IT THROUGH THIS WEEK, or to make your day sweeter with let’s say the greatest cinnamon sugar bagel from Einsteins, you need another person. But today, we confide in individualism and reach out in need. My idea is to revolutionize the health care world and make it a social support system for people to turn to by connecting and bridging all its compartments together from the docs to the pharmacists to the nurses to the families. Although formally it would be a consulting business venture, it is so much more. It means putting the care back in health care through efforts to support our mental, physical and social health.
