Bridge Budapest Fellowship Application
Hello, I’m Gabor, a 25 year-old university student from Budapest, Hungary.
I spend my summers teaching kinds to windsurf on Lake Balaton, and I spend most of my weekends DJ-ing in clubs and at festivals, but for most of the year I attend Corvinus University of Economics in Budapest, where I am finishing my studies on small business promotion.
For anyone studying economics, the modern role-model for society seems to be "homo-econmicus’' -- a creature that is rational, yet narrow-minded and self-interested and whose decisions are entirely motivated by how best to maximise profits.
Most people I know cannot be pigeonholed into this category, I certainly don't put myself here. Every day we make decisions based on instinct, social considerations and the ideal image we have for ourselves. None of these will ever lead to us maximising our profit.
Is it rational when you spend all your savings to see your family for Christmas? No, not at all. Do you know everything about the homeless guy you gave your money to? No, you can only see the surface. Will saving a whale raise your short-term profit? No, it'll probably put a hole in your budget and Homo-Econimus would be ashamed.
Luckily, we have people who think irrationally and put their own needs below those of others. My everyday heroes are completely irrational and 'waste' their precious time trying to make life better for all of us.
Internet means to me...
And what does the internet mean to me? Or, more importantly, what does it mean to our everyday heroes?
Faster communication connects volunteers with causes faster; more effective tools multiply the results of our efforts, and broader transparency facilitates acceptance.
Create your page on Facebook for any cause you think is important; share your newest songs on SoundCloud; build a community bigger and more powerful than any dictator could
Sell your handmade necklace on Etsy, spend otherwise idle hours waiting for a customer rescuing a neighbour’s cat from a tree.
This is what the internet means to me.
