Whether you are after a hike in the bush, a stroll along a beach or a meander over the fields, the Auckland region has a huge variety of walks suitable for families. On this occasion, we went for an evening stroll along the Tiritiri Track in Shakespear Regional Park which has all three. We were staying in Belle the Glammavan at the campground (you can find out more about camping at Shakespear here on the Auckland Council website) so started our walk from there. It’s an easy walk up the farm track and then up the grassy slope to the top of the hill. From there you’ll have views up the coast to the north and out to Tiritiri Matangi Island. It’s a lovely stroll over the fields before dropping down into the regenerating bush and the track takes you on to the beach at Te Haruhi Bay. The perfect spot for a rest and a play – you’ll look out over toward the Auckland skyline seemingly so close but, relaxing on the beach, it will feel just far enough away. We walked about half of the track and it took an hour. The whole Tiritiri Track is 5km and will take about 2 hours. It’s not suitable for buggies so bring a backpack for little kids.
