For the last project of m Video for Artists class, I wanted to reveal a glimpse into a bizarre head space, namely mine. I used mostly original footage, still photographs and a strong hand on the color corrector to create the colorful imagery used in Dreamscape. Using photographs and video from my BFA senior thesis about my Pursemonsters collection, I wanted to stay somewhat true to my original intention of doing more pieces about my Pursemonsters. However, the video became more of a revelation of me and sensibilities that I radiate in all my art. The Pursemonsters are sculptural creatures made of women’s beauty supplies, hair, purses, stockings, socks, fake nails, wire and nail polish. Since these characters have been swarming around in my head all semester, it was only fair that they take lead role in my video. There is also fire footage from one of the many times that my fiancée and I grill out on our patio. I also used footage from the live baby birds who were living in a nest on my front door until they flew. I could only film them when momma bird and papa bird were gone hunting worms, or they would chirp at me in an angry tone. For the audio, I recorded sounds from the Relax Melodies App and poetry readings done by my friends and myself. The poetry is mine, from my senior year of high school, which had been published in the national, award-winning literary-art magazine, Calliope. The tone in the audio seems tranquil yet sorrowful with the melodic melodies overlapping angst ridden poetry. I wanted to contrast that audio sensation with the visual sensations witnessed during the dreamscapes. The visual sensations are meant to confuse yet compel one to keep watching for what comes next. Overall, I want my audience to walk away from watching my video with a craving for more of my weirdness.
