I felt compelled to put this movie together after the invasion of Al Qaeda into the north of Mali, and the deteriorating situation and violence there. I was in Timbuktu in 2009 and 2010 for the Festival in the Desert and enjoyed the amazing music, hospitality, and culture there. My guide Kalil Baber has returned to Timbuktu after being a refugee in Bamako, the capital city, but he has lost everything, his camels and goats. Fortunately his family is safe, but without tourism he has no work. Who knows what will happen when the French troops pull out?
