An essential requirement for an accurate contact angle measurement is that the drop does not touch or wet beyond the edge of the test surface. This poses the challenge to dose especially small drops when analysing micro-structured samples like printed circuit boards, small medical products, lithographic structures, precision mechanics and assembly components, wires and single fibres. That challenge is met by the innovative picolitre dosing system PDDS system from DataPhysics Instruments. The picolitre dosing system PDDS can reproducibly dose droplets of down to 30 picolitres. The dosing system uses disposable cartridges that can be easily filled via aspiration using a standard pipette with an adapter. The disposable cartridges prevent any risk of cross-contamination and time-consuming cleaning efforts become unnecessary. Hence, pure liquids, suspensions, emulsions and other challenging liquids like inks or surfactant solutions can be investigated without any trouble. Since the disposable cartridges are available with various nozzle diameters even liquids with high viscosity and suspended particles can be used. With the high precision motorized stage and by dosing inks the ink-jet process can be emulated and the adsorption behaviour on the printing substrate analysed.
