Environmental Innovator (Small Business)
Davis Studio Architecture + Design is the principal architect for a new multi-generational community of green homes, rowhouses and apartments built in “micro-hoods” around community gardens. Made-in-Washington photovoltaic panels combined with highly energy efficient buildings are designed to create “net zero” homes that power themselves. Foot and cycle paths wind through the Grow Community, which is a 5- to 10-minute walk from the ferry to Seattle. Cars are relegated to the perimeter to separate them from pedestrian and community spaces. A shared fleet of cars and bikes will reduce the 8-acre community’s carbon footprint. The residences, built to LEED, BuiltGreen and One Planet standards, will be primarily factory pre-fabricated of local materials for low environmental impact and quick construction. The Grow Community is the first residential development in North America to receive a “One Planet Community” from the U.K. nonprofit BioRegional.
