It has been said, and I am in complete agreement, that nature is abound with rhythms. Everything from loud percussive or visual rhythms (footsteps, cars passing, raindrops/ structural and mechanical patterns etc, etc) to the less immediately obvious and subtle ones such as the lunar cycle, behavioural traits, genetics, the 4 seasons and so on.
When we watch a moving scene which has a steady beat/rhythm placed upon it, our brains rhythmically marry the two and we begin to see more patterns emerging from an otherwise tedious scene.
With this film I tried to emphasise some of the natural rhythms which happened as I filmed the carwash process. I also emphasised some of the patterns within the music, but also purposely left some of the other visual events (cars passing, spinning brushes, lights blinking, etc) to their own devices within the song resulting in the viewer placing these disparate events on a beat or word.
The video edits in this film (quakes, colour washes, fisheye lens, etc) are there not only there to emphasise some of the spoken words, but also to reaffirm this marriage of visual and aural rhythms which encourages the viewer to seek out rhythmic patterns for themselves.
Thanks for watching.
