For my sound sculpture I chose a washing machine. My goal was to overlap the visuals of the machine being loaded, hands turning the dials, flowing water filling the drum, lid being shut, and the vibration of the lid during the cycle with the subtle sounds from loading the machine, the heavy sound of the lid closing, the cranking of the dials, the running water, and the vibrating sounds of the drum. I repeated the visuals and sounds as to narrate the job (doing laundry) as tedious and endless. In one of the images the lid is vibrating and you can see the overlapped images from inside the drum, which gives the viewer a strong sense of the machine as a whole, both inside and out. I used organic sounds from the video recording alone, which I am satisfied with the results. The machine is mechanical and makes mechanical noises, but I feel the noises from this actual machine marry better than add-in noises. The video would have a different feeling for me if I had placed add-in noises. As is, I feel more connected with the finished project because the authentic noises with the images from their native object feel truer.
