A Right to Build

Over the last year and a half, London-based architecture & strategic design firm 00 have been developing WikiHouse, an open source construction system that tests the disruptive potential of digital manufacturing to radically lower the thresholds of time, cost and skill in the production of buildings; and to seed more democratic models of urban development. The aim is to make it possible for almost anyone to design, share, download, adapt and “print” low-cost, high-performance structures which can be assembled without traditional construction skills. At Fabrica, WikiHouse co-founder Alastair Parvin talks about where the project needs to go next, and make the case for citizen-led urbanism, open source construction and a global hardware commons.
