“The point of critique is not justification but a different way of feeling: another sensibility.”
Gilles Deleuze, Nietzche and Philosophy
Critical perspective, requires being able to choose different alternatives and to move beyond any narrative or a phenomenon, to push that phenomenon towards to a moment of crisis which is the home of the critique.
Gönül Nuhoğlu, will create her interactive installation entitled BANG! in an alternative artist initiative PASAJist. In this installation she will purposefully transpose a shooting stall, a familiar element of an amusement park, in order to achieve a critical perspective on the topology of the artist-collector and the art market.
Topology of the institutional art world consists of traders, galleries, collectors, museums, guides, critics and media has been the subject of the critical narratives occasionally. Effective critics on the collectors’ habit of seeing art as an instrument of investment echo on complementary. Today’s collectors are much more interested in art’s spectacular feature and they are far beyond being supporters. Guy Debord, defines spectacle as “capital accumulated to the point where it becomes the image”. And Hal Foster, use definition’s reverse as “an image accumulated to the point where it becomes capital” in another context. In different ways both conditions find meaning in the relationship between art and collectors. Such is the logic of many private art collections today that reminiscent of theme parks. BANG! is fully situated around this idea.
The shooting stall that used in the installation is a symbol borrowed from a fun fair; the audience that asked to hit the targets are the active elements of the game; the targets are formed as the images and works of the promising artists and an onomatopoeic expression of shooting gun BANG! emphasizes the crisis of the critical moment. At the end of this game, successful audiences will have chance to win the “collector’s certificate”.
Why the artist uses promising artists’ and their works’ images instead standard targets? How the audiences qualify as a collector? Is art market just a game? What is needed for being a collector? While provoking all of these questions and more BANG!, intertwines both the aesthetic and game experience.
