The annual Open Gov Summit hosted by Zaizi revealed encouraging progress for open source in the public sector, helped by the government’s decision to adopt open standards last November. This year’s debate also emphasised the growing relevance of Cloud as organisations migrate to more open, flexible architectures and deliver applications through a wider range of devices.

We talked to Tariq Rashid on the day who discussed how user requirements must be at the centre of IT’s universe - in sharp contrast to the prevailing approach of IT-centred application delivery, he felt new applications and services must be built around user needs. Tariq also discusses how Government must embrace ‘commodity’ technology - the need for public sector organisations to change from procuring mostly highly specialised, proprietary software on long-term contracts to ‘commodity’ IT software components built on open standards.
