A period of boom, mostly manifesting itself towards the end of the century, will generally trigger a period of depression, which results in a reorientation on one's own culture. This period of uncertainty can be fertile ground for polarisation, which can, in turn, lead to (violent) conflict situations. The Netherlands is currently experiencing the longest peaceful period in her history. Membership of organisations such as NATO and the UN has led the population to believe that peace will be maintained. When talking about armed forces, one prefers to use the word 'defense'.
The chance of an attack in the Netherlands or on Dutch interests has increased over the past years. The terrorist threat level was adjusted from 'limited' to 'substantial' in March 2013, amongst others due to a growing inclination to violence among youngsters.
