I’ve always been interested in a viewer’s relationship with a work of art—the average time an individual spends with a museum piece is 3 seconds, and I find toying with how to prolong and pervert that statistic compelling. Recently I’ve become obsessed with the cat video as a cultural phenomenon—they’re disturbingly identical in form and content (and insomuch as they are similar they are staggeringly dull); and yet, I can’t look away. So, in homage to Baldessari, I made a video featuring my cat in my studio wearing a sign around her neck that says “I will not make any more boring art.” I thought she was going to gambol around like the adorable pint-sized gazelle that she is and just charm the pants out off people, but instead she just sat on my desk for literally 45 minutes flicking her tail and occasionally glancing towards the periphery as if she’s about to make a move. The result is both painfully dull and deliciously irresistible.
